Description of heritage

  • Descriptif du centre d'interprétation
A jewel in the crown of local Romanesque architecture, the Beaugency abbey church was built in the late 12th century, and the convent buildings were subsequently remodelled in the modern era. Although its exterior is extremely sober, it contains one of the most remarkable choirs of any church in the Loire Valley.

Highly prized for its acoustics and unique atmosphere, the abbey church hosts a number of musical events every year, including the Festival de Sully et du Loiret, one of the biggest classical music festivals in France.

One of the most important events in the abbey's history was the Council of 1152, which annulled the marriage of King Louis VII of France to Eleanor of Aquitaine.
