There were as many as 37 mills in Baccon, Huisseau-sur-Mauves and Meung-sur-Loire, powered by the River Mauves. The first flour mills were built in the second half of the 6th century. Tan mills (crushed tree bark used by tanners) appeared in the 11th century, followed by fulling mills (used to degrease and soften sheets), powder mills in the 12th and 13th centuries, and chamois (leather) mills in the 18th century. In the 15th century, Meung-sur-Loire had 8 paper mills.
Most of them were destroyed by fire, the dreaded scourge of mills. The Coutelet flour mill was the last one to operate until 2010.
